What ever happened to "Dancehall"? Have we forgotten the importance of going "Back to Basics"?
Dancehall has forgotten its roots and culture. A lot of the music has become very dark and gritty which has played a major role in the rise of violence in Jamaica and where dancehall music is consumed. There was a time where you would go to parties and everyone danced the night away because the energy of the music was on a high frequency and made people feel good! The world needs more of that. In the words of Gerald Levy aka "Faada Bogle" and "Mr. Wacky", there is a need for the dancehall fraternerity to go "Back to Basics". This applies to the dancing, the way music is created and released into the universe, fashion, style, and more. I'll go basic with you, and you go basic with me. I'll respect you and you respect me. It all starts with you. Love is the answer!
What is the current state of modern R&B? How is SXNTYLR contributing to the music culture?
Modern R&B is the not the same R&B that many people grew up to love. Specifically, R&B music from the 80's, 90's, and even 2000's is different from modern R&B. A singer would sing and an MC would spit bars on a track and that balance made 'Hip-Hop and R&B' beautiful. When the singers began to rap and the MCs began to sing, there was a shift in the musical atmosphere which has lead to we now call modern R&B. There was a time when a lot of the music being created by artists were done from the ground up and/or inspired from the music that came before them; sampling. Nowadays, in R&B, a lot of the songs are not even sampling records from the past... they pretty much take the entire record and call it brand new. This is where SXNTYLR comes in as a contribution to the music culture. A resurgence of live instrumentation, paying homage to the greats that paved the way for modern artists, creating more love songs that are about togetherness and not separateness, and making people dance again!
How has the TRUMPET sound impacted "Hip-Hop"? Why does live instrumentation matter?
The TRUMPET sound is in the DNA of all lovers of Hip-Hop culture; specifically the music. The most sampled artist in Hip-Hop is ... (inserts drum roll) ... James Brown! Where did James Brown recruit most of his musicians from? Miles Davis! One of the most influential musician of the 21st century, and what was his instrument? The TRUMPET! That alone speaks volumes. Live instrumentation matters because people have dedicated their lives to mastering their instruments and technology has found a way to emulate the sounds of musical instruments. However, real musicians play from their soul and there are some notes/chord progressions that NO technological device can produce...may even come close... but it is not the same. Inventions such as ProTools, Logic, Reason, etc are extremely helpful in recording/music creation because the market is not as saturated with musicians as many years ago. Nonetheless, it is always best to go with live instrumentation. Respect The Musician!
